Tesa Kathryn: Belly & Baby Portraits

I met Mark and Emmalee a few years ago when I photographed their beautiful May wedding. Little did I know that our relationship would take a deeper turn a couple of years later when we found ourselves bonding over mutual feelings of despair and grief from miscarriage. Getting to know Emmalee even around the time of her wedding, and learning of the strength and sweetness about her due to losing her father when she was younger, was really remarkable. She and Mark were a joy to work with on their wedding day. Having never anticipated the struggle with infertility they would encounter, we would never have known how our paths would keep crossing after their wedding day and through the first few years of their marriage.

Emmalee became pretty open with me after watching me from a distance lose babies to miscarriage when she found herself face to face with the same pain. Emmalee and I quickly moved from a client/photographer relationship to a really sweet friendship. After months of texts, emails, chats and prayers together, Emmalee shared the joyful news that she was expecting again after miscarriage! Having cherished my own pregnancies with my Rainbow Babies, I told Emmalee I’d be honored to do her maternity photos. Here are some of my favorites from their session a few months ago!

Fast forward a few months, and I was overjoyed to hear of the birth of Tesa Kathryn - spelled this way to honor and reflect the initials of Emmalee’s late father. Tesa was a precious gift given to Mark and Emmalee after a long and painful journey. Watching couples stare at their newborns always feels magical - but it’s especially amazing when you understand the journey taken to get to that point when they’re holding this tiny miracle that they often doubted they’d ever receive.

The same house that I photographed Emmalee putting her wedding gown on in a few years prior, was where I met sweet baby Tesa for the first time in the arms of her beautiful Mama. This day was so amazing. Not only because I got to capture these fleeing moments with new parents and their new baby, but because of the conversations we shared about God provision, answered prayer, and mutual understanding of the paths we had both walked. Emmalee even gave me a bracelet honoring my miscarriages before I left their house that day. Talk about special!

On top of it all, Tesa could not have been more perfect for our session. She was awake and alert but not fussy. She fell asleep in a timely manner and didn’t mind much when we would change her clothes or move her around for a new photograph. It was truly a joy to be with the Lawrence family! Congratulations, Mark and Emmalee for entering gracefully into this next chapter of your lives together.

Project TEN | September-December 2017

This post is proof that having an infant puts most personal projects on the back burner when attempting to return back to client work and meet deadlines for Christmas cards. This is also proof that I picked up my camera just as much as I used to and made sure the first few months of our baby boy's life was well documented (you can see more of my personal work on my personal instagram @katiehall). September - the start of school and daily homework. It was also the month I realized Theo is growing before my eyes so I had to capture even his sweet naptime.

October - festive fall events and LOTS of leaves in our new backyard. Made for lots of leaf blowing for Matt but LOTS of fun for the girls.

November - the start of the holidays and Theo's first overnight stay in the hospital for upper respiratory issues.

December - such a magical time with a new baby. The girls have adored having Theo in the house and Christmas morning was no exception. So thankful for these sweet times with my little family as well as a visit from my grandparents to meet all the latest additions to our extended family!

I am already working on January's Project TEN post so be on the lookout for more consistent posts in the new year!
